Update: Prof Mushirul Hasan stable and improving

New Delhi: The health of Professor Mushirul Hasan, former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, is stable now and is constantly improving, according to his former colleague Professor Obaid Siddiqui.

“Though still in ICU for obvious reasons he is now fully conscious. When someone read a report published in The Hindu about him yesterday he listened carefully and responded by smiling at times,” Prof. Siddiqui wrote on his Facebook on Sunday night, adding, “Doctors attending him are very pleased with the improvement in his health so far.”

Prof Hasan, the eminent historian and former vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia was critically injured in a road accident last Saturday while on his way to Mewat, after which he was admitted at the private hospital in the capital.

The 67-year-old Hasan was headed to Mewat on Saturday morning to be the chief guest at a school when the accident occurred at around 11.00 am. He had suffered serious injuries including multiple fractures and an injury to his head. At the Apollo Hospital, he underwent multiple surgeries on Saturday under a team of neurosurgeons. After the CT scan, doctors had said on Sunday that there is some improvement in his condition.

However, he will remain on dialysis for the next two days to prevent any kind of infection. He also has a blood clot on the back of his head but doctors feel that they don’t have to perform any surgery immediately to remove it.

Meanwhile, Jamia NSS has appealed to blood donor with ‘O’ blood group to reach the hospital as Prof Hasan might require several units. Jamia fraternity and his colleagues in the intelligentsia have expressed grief and are praying for a speedy recovery.

Prof Siddiqui of the AJK MCRC, had also written on his Facebook page: “Let us all pray for his speedy recovery and give strength to Zoya Hasan and his other family members in this very trying moment.”
Zoya, an eminent Political Scientist and a professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University is Hassan’s wife. He had taken voluntary retirement last year, after his differences with the administration when he had alleged harassment and humiliation.
