Minorities Commission kicks off awareness campaigns in remote areas of Manipur

Imphal: Manipur State Minorities Commission (MSMC) kicks off educational awareness campaign in the remote areas of the state. The first awareness camp was organized at Sangaiyumpham, a Muslim inhabited area of Thoubal district, on December 6, 2014.

The camp was organized with the assistance of Cherapur Makha Leikai Youth Development Association on the theme “Protection of Minorities’ rights,” at Sagaiyumpham Part II, Cherapur Makha Leikai.

The camp was graced by MSMC Chairperson A. Halim Chowdhury, members of MSMC Dr. M.S. Ningombam and Reverend N. Devendra Singh, Project Director of Minority & OBC Economic Development Society (MOBEDS) Md. Salauddin Khan, Chief Executive Officer of Wakf Board, Manipur Md. Nijamuddin Khan, Pradhan of Sangaiyumpham Part II Md. Fakaruddin as Chief Guest, President and Guests of Honour respectively.

MOBEDS Project Director Md. Salauddin Khan spoke on the policies and programmes taken up by the Department of Minorities & Other Backward Classes (MOBC) for the minorities. Khan informed the gathering about the different central sponsored schemes taken up by the Department of MOBC for the minority students, which included Pre-Matric scholarship, Post-Matric scholarship and Merit cum Means scholarship, Free Coaching & Allied Scheme and the development of educational infrastructures in some of the identified minority concentrated blocks and districts of the state under the Multi-sectoral Development Programme (MsDP).

Assistant Professor of D.M. College of Arts Dr. Syed Ahmed spoke on the topic “Status of Education of the Minorities in Manipur with special reference to Muslims.”

N. Devendra Singh spoke on the theme “Responsibilities of parents and community in the promotion of education of minorities,” while Assistant Project Officer of MOBEDS Md. Alam Azad lectured on the duties of minority students.

The camp was attended by large number students, guardians, teachers and community leaders.

MSMC is going to organize such camps in Yairipok, Thoubal, Keibung and other parts of the state.
