Thiruvananthapuram: Even when the Hindutva organizations have drawn flak for their alleged attempts at re-conversion in the northern states and cancelled a planned event of ‘ghar wapsi’ in Aligarh on Christmas day, the organizations seem unfazed here in Kerala. A number of ghar wapsi events are planned on Christmas day across all districts in the state.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Kerala unit has launched a help line offering support for those who want to embrace Hinduism again. “We have already received 200-odd enquiries from across Kerala. ‘Ghar Wapsi’ will be held at all districts on December 25,” sources said.

Meanwhile, amidst raging controversy, the VHP on Sunday reconverted 30 people from eight Christian families to the Hindu fold in a ‘ghar wapsi’ programme at Cheppad in Alappuzha district. The ritual was held at a local temple at Kanichanallor.
VHP leader Prathap G Padikkal, who arranged the function, said the families “expressed their desire to come back to Hinduism” and the VHP “only facilitated the return.”
He said the ancestors of these families had converted to Christianity some decades ago.
Another 150 families in the district have also expressed their wish to embrace Hindusiam and VHP would arrange their ‘home coming’ too, he said.
The ‘ghar wapasi’ function drew heavy criticism from various religious outfits and political parties in the state. All India Sunni Jam-e-YyathulUlema general secretary Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar came down heavily against the forced conversions saying the ghar wapasi melas were planned attempts to stir up popular perceptions against the religious conversions and to hamper the secular credentials of the country. Communist Party of India (Marxist) state general secretary Pinarayi Vijayan also slammed Sangh Parivar outfits for the reconversions.
“The government should take stringent actions against the outfits, which spread communal hatred for petty political gains,” he told media persons.
