Kozhikode: “The country is still suffering from the consequences of Babri Masjid demolition. The 23rd anniversary of the demolition is an occasion to regret and look up on the dark episode of the country’s history,” CPM leader and Politbureau member Prakash Karat said here on Sunday.

Karat was inaugurating the ‘secular seminar against the Sangh Parivar fascist threat’ here at Malabar Christian College on Sunday. It was organised by Kelu Ettan Padana Gaveshana Kendram, a forum by CPM to promote cultural and intellectual activities, to observe the Babri day.

The CPM leader also lashed out at Sangh fold saying it was questioning the concept of secularism. “BJP is indirectly questioning the concept of secularism while RSS directly doing the same,” he said.

Referring to the recent statement by RSS ideologue Manmohan Vaidya, who said secularism is irreverent in India, the CPM leader said that such statements were the direct rejection and onslaught on the secular fabric of the country.

Noting that the future of secularism was at stake under the BJP rule, Karat said that the Sangh Parivar was trying to replace the constitution, based on democracy and secularism, with Hindutva ideology based on majoritarian communalism.

The stands of BJP leaders also came under heavy criticism. “While initiating the discussion in the two days special session in Loksabha to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Constitution framer Dr. Ambedkar, the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh dared to state that secularism was the most misused word in the country,” Karat said.
