Aligarh: The President of India in his capacity as Visitor of the Aligarh Muslim University has approved the proposal of the University for the establishment of the Faculty of International Studies and creation of eight new Departments of studies under this faculty.

The Faculty of International Studies will have eight departments: Department of West Asian Studies and North African Studies, Department of Chinese Studies, Department of South Asia and Indian Ocean Region Studies, Department of Asia-Pacific Studies, Department of American and European Studies, Department of Strategic and Security Studies, Department of Foreign Languages and Department of South African and Brazilian Studies. This includes the existing Department of West Asian Studies which will be renamed as Department of West Asian Studies and North African Studies.

The University, which intends to start teaching in Chinese, French, German, Russian and Spanish under the Department of Foreign Languages, has already announced admission to undergraduate programme in the above languages.

The creation of this new Faculty is a major breakthrough, which is the result of efforts made by AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah to bring in latest disciplines in the University in order to achieve the goal of AMU becoming number one University in near future.

The process of establishing Faculty of International Studies (FIS) started almost two years back in keeping with the vision of the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Shah.

Major General (Professor) G. G. Dwivedi was appointed coordinator of the project. The University’s efforts have finally fructified with the receipt of MHRD letter communicating the Visitor’s sanction.
