J&K withdraws cases against 634 stone-pelters as Eid amnesty

Srinagar : The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday withdrew cases against 634 youth booked for stone-pelting in different police station areas of the state as a goodwill measure ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, an official said.

“Following directions from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to expeditiously review cases against stone-pelters booked under different FIRs in police stations, the state police has decided to close cases against 634 stone pelters caught during violent protests,” a state government official told IANS here.

The official, however, said cases against habitual stone-pelters and those booked for such offenses at more than one police station have not been closed.

The decision comes as a goodwill measure by Mehbooba Mufti and is the first of its kind after she took over as the chief minister on April 4 this year.
