Ahead of Student Union elections, AMU VC appeals for peaceful environment

As the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is celebrating the birth bicentenary year of its founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor has appealed the students to cooperate in maintaining a peaceful and academic environment in the varsity campus.

“We are celebrating the birth bicentenary year of our most revered founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan,” said the Vice-Chancellor adding that this year has been a juncture where the university has reinforced the commitment to Sir Syed’s mission by revisiting AMU’s glorious history and asserting our formidable presence on the educational map of the Nation through laurels and achievements earned by students and teachers.

However, the appeal to maintain a peaceful environment inside the campus has little to do with the birth celebration of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. The appeal is directed towards the upcoming students’ union election in the University.

Prof M Shafey Kidwai, PRO at AMU, told TwoCircles.net, “The statement, as well as the appeal, is sent to media houses to call peace on the campus.”

Recently, AMU students sat on protest demanding announcements of Students’ Union election, a demand which was met in few days.

Now the Aligarh Muslim University is all scheduled to go under elections in mid-November.

“That is one reason that the University is celebrating the bicentanary anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, but the statement was issued keeping the elections in mind,” added Kidwai.

AMU VC Prof Mansoor added, “I appeal to you (students) to continue working in a positive and constructive manner for safeguarding and strengthening the reputation and image of the University.”

He pointed out that even if some elements attempt to create chaos and disorder in the University on frivolous issues, “it is the duty of all of us to exercise restraint and act in a responsible and mature manner and not allow anybody to spread rumors for the purpose of misguiding.”

He further pointed out that since AMU has always been a unique amalgam of the democratic spirit and traditional values and to sustain this, the election process of AMU Students Union and representatives of the students to AMU Court must be conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

“I seek your cooperation and constructive participation in safeguarding your interests in the University and also to take AMU to even better position in the country and the world,” said Prof Mansoor, while concluding his appeal.
