AMU to celebrate Sir Syed Day with ​f​ormer Indian President Pranab Mukherjee as chief guest

Aligarh: Former Indian President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will deliver the commemoration address as the chief guest on the bicentennial birth celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan on October 17, 2017 at the university’s Athletics Ground. AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor will give the welcome address.

The proceedings of the day will begin with a Quran Khwani (Quranic Recitation) at the university Mosque. Prof Mansoor with senior professors and officers of the university will pay floral tributes at the Mazaar (grave) of Sir Syed after the traditional ritual of ‘Chadar Poshi’.

During the commemoration ceremony, the Vice Chancellor with Ms Manisha Sinha (Post Master General, Agra Region, Uttar Pradesh) on behalf of the Department of Post, Government of India will release an album with a special cover on Sir Syed, My Ticket, brochure and a stamp with AMU logo.

Prof Mansoor will inaugurate the ‘Exhibition of Books and Photographs pertaining to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’ at the Sir Syed House. The exhibition is jointly organised by Maulana Azad Library and Sir Syed Academy.

The Vice Chancellor will present the ‘Sir Syed International and National Awards of Excellence’ to noted scholar and author of ‘Aligarh’s First Generation: Muslim Solidarity in British India’ (1975/1996), Prof David Lelyveld and Justice M S A Siddiqui (Former Chairperson, National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions of India-NCMEI) respectively. The winners of the ‘All India Essay Writing Competition’ will also receive prizes from the chief guest.

Prof Syeda Nuzhat Zeba (Department of English) and Dr Mohibul Haque (Department of Political Science) will deliver special speeches during the commemoration ceremony, while B​A (Final year) students​,​ M M Ashraf and Yusra Khan will also deliver speeches.

AMU Alumni Affairs Committee is also organising the Sir Syed Bicentenary Annual Alumni Meet 2017 on October 15 and 16, 2017. The meet will have special sessions on women achievers and Aligarh Open University, a platform through which AMU alumni are sharing their experiences and knowledge with current AMU students.
