The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has expressed satisfaction over the halt of “trigger-happy saffron brigade’s unhindered march following the results of significant by-polls in North Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar after BJP’s triumph in the North East.”
A. Sayeed, the national president at SDPI, in a statement said, “The successive by-election defeats of the BJP in the Hindi heartland – first in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and now in Uttar Pradesh and to an extent in Bihar — point to a discernible disillusionment of the voters with the BJP while also signifying a virtual end to the long honeymoon of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the electorate.”
Sayeed said that the defeat handed out to the BJP by the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party combine in the Lok Sabha by-election in Gorakhpur in what was seemingly a pocket borough of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sent shock waves down the spine of the BJP bosses. Yogi had won the seat five times in a row and was being touted as unbeatable. Over-confidence indeed did him in as did the tenaciousness of rivals Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati.
He said, “There is no denying that the masses in the countryside are feeling betrayed with the policies like demonetization eating into the impoverished farmer’s meager savings as are the youth in general with a chronic lack of job avenues created under the NDA regime. The tall promises the BJP made in the Lok Sabha and Assembly campaigns are haunting their leaders today.”
He asserted Modi’s four-year rule and Yogi’s one year rule have not done any good to the people of India including Hindus. “Modi has given untold sufferings to people and never bothered about people. Yogi never bothered about children deaths in hospital and giving lectures about UP in other states,” said the statement further. “But people of UP have given hammer blow to both of them and they will never forget.”
Sayeed said that the voters in UP seem to have shot a warning to Yogi that they do not approve of inhuman encounters, medical negligence due to which hundreds of kids died in Gorakhpur, and the bizarre saffron paintings throughout the state. The statement said, “Saffron’s invincibility is withering to the relief of majority of citizens.”
