Following the dastardly attack in which 49 CRPF Jawans were killed in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, communal tensions ran high in Jammu following which a curfew has been imposed and internet services have been stopped in the region.
On Friday, members of certain Hindu right-wing parties went on a rampage and damaged property and burning vehicles belonging to the Muslims in the region. What was even more worrying is that the mobs managed to do so even though there was a curfew imposed in the region as the security forces preferred to look the other way, say the residents.
Reports suggested that there were mob attacks in Gujjar Nagar area where several vehicles were damaged by stone pelters who burnt tyres and put up barricades in various parts of Jammu. Various news reports claimed a dozen people had been left injured. Two army columns have been sent to stage flag march and maintain peace, according to officials.
According to information provided by one of TwoCircles.net’s correspondents in the region, such incidents seem to be happening in different pockets of the Jammu city inhabited by Muslims. He added that the Muslims are terrorised and feeling helpless as the police are doing nothing to stop them.
“The right-wingers are using the tragic incident of CRPF convoy bombing as an opportunity to set the stage for the coming parliamentary and assembly elections by polarising the communities as was done in 2008 in Amarnath land row agitation,” said the correspondent.
Following the attack on the CRPF convoy, security has been beefed across the state with thousands of policemen posted across the state. However, although the Northern command headquarters of the Indian Army is just 60 km from the city of Jammu, these frenzied mobs managed to damage property, intimidate residents and burn cars and other valuables.
