Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor condoled the sad demise of former AMU faculty member and father of modern legal education in India, Padma Shri Prof N R Madhava Menon, who passed away after a prolonged illness on May 8, 2019.
Extending sincere condolences, Prof Mansoor said, “We received with shock, the news of Prof Menon’s passing. It is a great loss to the entire AMU community and legal fraternity.”
He added that Prof Menon was an institution builder, a pioneer in the Indian legal education system and a professor of repute who gave an impetus to legal scholarship in the country.
Prof Menon was the first PhD of Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). He also completed LLM from AMU.
He joined the Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University in 1960 as a faculty member and later moved to Delhi University in 1965.
Prof Menon conceptualized and worked out the National Law School system in the country and with the establishment of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore in 1989, completely overhauled the legal education system by introducing the five-year honours degree in law.
He served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore and National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata.
Prof Menon was the author of over a dozen books on legal education, legal profession, legal aid, judicial training and administration of justice.
