Bihar Elections: a look at the performance of Muslim candidates

The results of the Bihar election are here. After several rounds of late-night counting, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) – comprising of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal United (JDU) and other small parties, has the required majority to form the government by winning 125 seats, while the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) led by Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Tejaswi Yadav got 110 seats.

The Grand Alliance is a coalition of political parties which was formed ahead of the elections and comprises of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Indian National Congress (INC), and Left parties including Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] , Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist)(Liberation) [CPI(ML)(L)].

The Grand Alliance had fielded 33 Muslim candidates. TwoCircles.net looks at how these Muslim candidates fared in the electoral battlefield. We also look at the performance of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIN) from the 20 constituencies they fought from.

  1. Kanti

The Grand Alliance backed RJD candidate Israil Mansuri got 64,220 votes, defeating the Independent candidate Ajit Kumar by 10,454 votes. NDA stood at third place.

  1. Simri Bakhtiyarpur

The Grand Alliance supported RJD candidate Chaudhary Yusuf Meher won with 75,202 votes. Yusuf defeated Mukesh Sahni of the NDA backed Vikassheel Insaan Party by around 1900 votes.

  1. Keoti

 The senior RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui was the Grand Alliance candidate here and he lost to BJP candidate. Abdul Bari got 71,053 votes while BJP’s Murari Mohan Jha got 76,320 votes.

  1. Bisfi

The Grand Alliance candidate Fayyaz Ahmed lost to BJP candidate Hari Bhushan Thakur by 10,469 votes. The Grand Alliance got 75,829 votes here.

  1. Gobindpur

Mohammad Kamran, a candidate of the Grand Alliance, won by 32,776 votes. He defeated the JDU candidate. Kamran obtained 79,019 votes.

6.Rafiganj

The Grand Alliance backed candidate Mohammad Nehaluddin won by 9,219 votes. Nehaluddin got 62,886 votes while Independent candidate Pramod Kumar Singh, on the other hand, got 53,667 votes.

  1. Banka

The Grand Alliance backed RJD candidate Javed Ansari was defeated by the BJP candidate Ram Narayan Mandal by 17,093 votes. Javed Ansari received 52,317 votes.

  1. Sursand

Syed Abu Dojana of the Grand Alliance lost by 9242 votes. Abu Dojana received 57,863 votes while JDU’s Dilip got 67,105 votes.

  1. Narkatiya

The RJD candidate Shamim Ahmed defeated JDU candidate Shyam Bihari Prasad by 27,377 votes. Shamim Ahmed received 84,970 votes.

  1. Barauli

The Grand Alliance candidate Reyazul Haque Raju was defeated by BJP candidate Rampravesh Rai by 14,493 votes. Raju received 66,933 votes.

  1. Dhaka

The current MLA and Grand Alliance candidate Faisal Rahman was defeated by BJP candidate Pawan Kumar Jaiswal by 10,114 votes. Faisal Rahman got 89,678 votes.

  1. Baisi

The Grand Alliance candidate Haji Abdus Subhan was defeated by AIMIM candidate Ruknuddin Ahmed. Haji Abdus Subhan received 37,628 votes.

  1. Samastipur

The Grand Alliance candidate Akhtarul Islam Shaheen won by nearly 4,000 votes. Akhtarul Islam Shaheen got 68,299 votes while JDU’s Ashwamedha Devi got 63,711 votes.

  1. Jokihat

The Grand Alliance candidate Sarfaraz Alam lost by 7543 votes to his brother and AIMIM candidate Shahnawaz Alam. Sarfaraz Alam received 51,980 votes.

  1. Gaura Bauram

The Grand Alliance backed candidate Mohammad Afzal Khan was defeated by NDA-backed Vikassheel Insaan Party candidate Swarn Singh by 7519 votes. Afzal Khan received 51,970 votes.

  1. Kochadhaman

The Grand Alliance backed candidate Shahid Alam finished third with 26,134 votes. AIMIM candidate Izhar Asfi won.

  1. Thakurganj

The Grand Alliance backed RJD candidate Saud Alam defeated Independent candidate Gopal Aggarwal by 23,509 votes. Saud Alam got 79,354 votes. JDU candidate Naushad Alam remains at number three.

18.Nathnagar

The RJD candidate Ali Ashraf Siddiqui defeated JDU candidate Laxmikant Mandal by 7,481 votes. Ali Ashraf got 78,416 votes.

19.Supaul

The Congress candidate Minnat Rahmani was defeated by JDU candidate Bijendra Prasad Yadav by 28,296 votes. The Grand Alliance backed Congress candidate Minnat Rahmani received 57,625 votes.

  1. Jale

The Grand Alliance backed Congress Candidate Maskoor Ahmed Usmani lost to BJP’s Jibesh Kumar by 21,926 votes. Maskoor Ahmed Usmani received 65,395 votes.

  1. Gopalganj

The Grand Alliance backed Congress candidate Asif Ghafoor was defeated by BJP candidate Subhash Singh by 41,136 votes. Asif Ghafoor received 36,201 votes.

  1. Bahadurganj

The two-time MLA from Bahadurganj and Grand Alliance candidate Tausif Alam was defeated by AIMIM candidate Anjar Naeem by 55,654 votes. Tausif Alam received 29,818 votes.

23.Kishanganj

The Congress candidate from Grand Alliance Izharul Hussain from Kishanganj won by a mere 1221 votes. He defeated BJP candidate Sweety Singh. Izharul Hussain received 60,599 votes.

  1. Amour

The Grand Alliance candidate and four-time MLA Abdul Jalil Mastan finished third with 31,475 votes. Bihar AIMIM president Akhtarul Iman defeated JDU candidate Saba Zafar by 52,296 votes.

  1. Araria

The Congress candidate from the Grand Alliance, Abidur Rahman defeated JDU candidate Shagufta Azeem by 47,828 votes. Abidur Rahman got 1,02,855 votes.

  1. Kadwa

The Congress candidate Shakeel Ahmed Khan defeated Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) candidate Chandrabhushan Thakur by 31,919 votes. Shakeel Ahmed received 70,517 votes. NDA’s JDU candidate Suraj Prakash stood third with 31,581 votes.

  1. Forbesganj

The Grand Alliance backed Congress candidate Zakir Hussain was defeated by BJP candidate Vidyasagar Kesari by nearly 19,000 votes. Zakir Hussain received 82,381 votes.

  1. Pranpur

The Grand Alliance backed Congress candidate Tauqir Alam lost to BJP candidate Nisha Singh by 3,266 votes. Tauqeer Alam received 76,326 votes.

  1. Kasba

The Congress candidate Afaque Alam won by 17,081 votes against Lok Janshakti Party candidate Pradeep Kumar Das. Afaque Alam got 77,110 votes.

  1. Aara

The Left candidate Quyamuddin Ansari was defeated by BJP candidate Amarendra Pratap Singh by 3,105 votes. Quyamuddin Ansari got 67,250 votes.

  1. Aurai

Aftab Alam, the Left candidate of the Grand Alliance, lost to BJP’s Ram Surat Kumar by 48,008 votes. Aftab Alam received 42,359 votes.

  1. Balrampur

The Left candidate and sitting MLA Mahbub Alam emerged victorious over NDA-backed Vikassheel Insaan Party candidate Varun Kumar Jha by 53,078 votes. Mahbub Alam received 1,03,746 votes.

  1. Nautan

The Congress candidate Mohammad Kamran was defeated by BJP candidate Narayan Prasad by 26,106 votes. Congress candidate Kamran received 52,437 votes.

Asadudin Owaisi led All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has surprised everyone with its performance in the elections, emerging victorious in five seats out of the 20 seats it contested. We look at its performance in all seats.

  1. Raniganj – Possible chance of effecting the result on paper. But the biggest catch is Raniganj has only around 5% Muslim population and AIMIM candidate was a non-Muslim, Roshan Devi.

  1. Barari – Possible chance of effecting the results, but AIMIM candidate was non-Muslim and multiple Muslim candidates got around 9000 votes.

  1. Thakurganj – No possible effects on the results, but JDU fielded a Muslim candidate and BJP backed an independent candidate.
