The programme, named Tata Steel Parivar Scholarship, will cover the cost of education and accommodation of students offering diploma, graduate or post-graduate degrees.

The money will be paid to the institution directly where the student has taken admission, a company release here said.

It is part of the company's commitment to ensure better quality of life and sustainable livelihood for the members of Tata Steel family. Its primary objective is to provide technical and professional qualifications to the children of rehabilitated families, the release said.

At least 13 tribals protesting the construction of a boundary wall by Tata Steel were killed and several injured when police opened fire in the Kalinga Nagar industrial complex on January 2, 2006, about 100 km from here.

The Tatas were constructing the wall as a part of their proposed 10 million tonne steel plant in the region. The project has not taken off yet due to local opposition.
