A total of four temblors, the most powerful measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, hit the southern province of Hormozgan on Wednesday afternoon.

The epicenter of the largest quake was about 53 km (33 miles) southwest of Bandar Abbas, a provincial capital and the site of a major oil refinery. The tremor lasted for about 30 seconds and was followed by 10 aftershocks, the most powerful measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale.

More than 100 houses in rural areas have been seriously damaged and several power lines were destroyed. Fearing more shocks could follow, residents are staying outdoors.

The Red Crescent has delivered tents, blankets, water and food to the quake victims. Rescuers are searching for survivors and the governor of the province and other officials visited the affected areas.
