5.6-magnitude quake jolts Afghanistan

Kabul : An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck northeastern Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountainous region Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The moderate-strength quake with a depth of 208 km occurred at 05:58 local time (GMT 0128) Sunday, it said, with the epicenter lying 260 km north-northeast of Kabul, where the quake was also felt.

There has been no official report of human or property losses yet.

Earthquake is common in Hindu Kush region where the past month has seen several such moderate ones. The last quake which measured5.2 hit the region on Oct. 13.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in March 2002 hit Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region killing at least 1,000 people. Two earthquakes measuring 6.5 and 6.6 separately in 2004 and 2005 caused several fatalities each.
