Rebels mingling with Indian fishing boats in the area were trying to move in two boats towards Vidithalathivu, Mannar, 320 km north of the capital, when the navy initially warned them and confronted the boats, he said.

"They (rebels) fired rocket-propelled grenades and small arms at the navy, but could not cause any damage. After about an hour the navy sunk the two boats, killing six cadres on board," he added.

The region is used to smuggle fuel and other supplies into rebel-controlled areas.
