New Delhi : The Congress Working Committee (CWC) Saturday congratulated party president Sonia Gandhi for her "leadership" that led to United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pratibha Patil's victory in the presidential election.
The apex decision-making body of the party, meeting for the first time after the July 19 election, applauded Gandhi's "leadership and untiring efforts, which led to the impressive victory of the first woman president of India".
"The Congress thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the party for the united effort which led to this historic success," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said after the two-hour meeting chaired by Gandhi.
Patil, the UPA-Left candidate also backed by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), assumed office Wednesday after defeating then vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the independent candidate backed by the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
