Exit poll forecasts hung assembly for Delhi

By IANS,

New Delhi : Delhi is headed for a hung assembly with the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning nearly equal number of seats and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) becoming the kingmaker, an exit poll conducted by STAR News and Nielsen after Saturday’s balloting has showed.

The Congress, looking to secure a third consecutive term, will get 32 seats (down from 47 in 2002), while the BJP will get 31 (up from 20) in the 70-member house, Nielson said in a release.

The BSP, which failed to win a single seat in the last assembly elections, is tipped to win three seats and three remaining seats would go the Independents, like last time, it said.

In the process, the vote share of the Congress is seen going down from 48.13 percent to 40.5 percent, while the BJP would improve from 35.33 percent to 38.5 percent and the BSP from 5.76 percent to 12 percent, it said.

However, it added that the result can swing in 12-15 constituencies as they have a margin of less than two percent.

The estimates are based on field work in 32 constituencies, with a sample size of 16,000.
