Iraqi court rules second death sentences for “Chemical Ali”

Baghdad : An Iraqi court Tuesday sentenced late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s aide and cousin Ali Hassan al-Majid, better known as “Chemical Ali” to death for his role in crushing a Shia uprising after the 1991 Gulf War.

Al-Majid is already under death sentence for his role in the killing of thousands of Kurds during the 1988 campaign.

The court also sentenced to death former Baath party official Abdul-Ghani Abdul-Ghafur.

Former defence minister Sultan Hashim Ahmad al-Tai, who also faces the gallows in the Kurdish crackdown case, got 15 years in jail in Tuesday’s verdict.
