Mumbai attacks will make India more united: Prof Mushirul Hasan

New Delhi: “It is not an assault on individuals but on our democracy, on our way of life and our progress. We express our deep sorrow on the demise of so many innocent people,” said Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Prof Mushirul Hasan yesterday at a remembrance meeting at the campus for the victims of Mumbai terror attacks.

“But at this occasion we must also strengthen our resolve to fight such elements whether they are from outside or from within. The solidarity shown by the people across the country will leave us more united and stronger nation,” said Prof Hasan.



Referring to the growing tense relations between India and Pakistan following the Mumbai attacks, he said: “We must exercise restraint even in this hour of grave provocation. We must not allow others to incite our passions. These are very difficult and troubled time but the answer is to stay united to ensure that our security system is intact and strengthened.”

Over a thousand people gathered in the front lawns of the M A Ansari Auditorium at 5.15 pm. They lit candles offering condolences to the victims and showing solidarity with their families.



On the occasion the Vice Chancellor also spoke on the need for maintaining peace at a time like this and showing solidarity with the government as it too mourns the loss of lives. A nazm by noted Urdu poet Shahryar decrying acts of violence that perpetrate fear was recited by Ustad Zameer. This was followed by some extempore poetry recitation by senior journalist Saeed Naqvi.

Those present including staff and students of Jamia, local residents, invited guests from outside the Jamia neighborhood lit a candle as a mark of remembrance for the dead and joined the nation in this hour of collective grief.
