Guwahati : Drug lord and Assam’s most wanted criminal Pakhi Mian escaped from judicial custody Monday after drugging two policemen, a police officer said.
“There were two policemen posted with Mian and from preliminary investigations we found that the two were possibly drugged before Mian made good his escape in the early hours of Monday,” Guwahati city police chief P.C. Haloi said.
Mian, who was facing three murder charges and 21 other cases relating to smuggling of drugs, drugged the two Assam policemen and fled from the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, where he was admitted for medical treatment.
He was facing charges of murdering Revenue Intelligence official Tarun Dutta and a local journalist Mohammad Muslimuddin.
Mian was arrested by the West Bengal police in April and was handed over to the Assam police.
“We have sounded a high alert at all railway stations, airports, and on the highway to nab Mian,” Haloi said.
“We shall take appropriate action against the policemen if found guilty of neglecting their duties,” he added.
Witnesses said the two policemen were playing cards with Mian before his escape and had taken coffee and other things offered by him.
“The two guards started vomitting and Mian asked them to sleep on the floor. After some time, Mian said he wanted to go to the toilet and after that he never returned,” said an attendant, who was in the same ward where Mian was lodged.
