Radio Palestine on Sunday said “hundreds of Palestinians have gathered in the Areesh stadium since early morning to prepare for their return home.” Israel had closed off the Rafah land crossing that links Egypt and Palestinian territory in mid June after Hamas took over control of the Gaza Strip.

The closure left over 6,000 Palestinians stranded until an agreement was reached between Egypt and the Palestinian and the Israeli authorities to arrange for their entry back into the strip.

The Palestinians return via Al-Ouja crossing and then through Israeli controlled Beit Hanoun crossing in north Gaza.

Over 2,400 Palestinians managed to return home in five consecutive batches before the entry flow was suspended Friday and Saturday by Israel.
