Canberra : Hundreds of Australians gathered at Adelaide, state capital of South Australia, on Sunday to support a rally against the Israeli attack on Gaza Strip.
The protesters, who gathered outside the state’s Parliament House, called on the federal government to condemn the killing of innocent civilians in Gaza.
Bassam Dally, secretary for the Australian Friends of Palestine Association, said that injustice was a threat to justice everywhere in the world, including the Geneva Convention.
“All Australians care about human rights and should therefore be involved,” Australian Associated Press quoted him as saying at the rally.
Dally said he believed the Australian government should reflect on the beliefs of Australian people.
“The first statement by Acting Prime Minister Julie Gillard failed to condemn the killing of innocent Palestinians and Palestinians are human too,” he said.
Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young also criticized the federal government for its silence on the issue.
“I woke last week to hear on the radio that they had attacked a United Nations run school. I felt sick to my stomach and I thought surely the government has to stand up and say something about this today,” she said.
