He was picked up at a small airport outside Harare as he was about to fly to Johannesburg in South Africa to see his wife, the Ian Makoni told reporters. It was not clear why he was arrested.

The former opposition parliamentarian and outspoken critic of President Robert Mugabe was expected to be sworn in next week with other deputy ministers, while full ministers were due to be inducted later Friday.

Bennett’s commercial farm was expropriated in 2003 under Mugabe’s controversial land reform programme.

He was arrested on at least two occasions before leaving to live in neighbouring South Africa several years ago.
