A delegation of the Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Group met the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, Justice Rajendra Babu today. They were meeting in the backdrop of the refusal of Delhi Lieutenant Governor to direct a magisterial enquiry in the Batla House ‘encounter’.

The teachers expressed their concern at this gross violation of the NHRC guidelines on encounter killings by the Delhi Police and the government. “This is all the more disconcerting since the LG’s decision was based on the reports of the Delhi Police, which is an obviously interested party in the case,” they said.

The teachers urged the Chairperson to ensure that truth and justice prevails in the face of such assaults on the very institution of NHRC itself. The Chairperson also communicated his dissatisfaction with the LG’s recommendation against magisterial enquiry, and assured the delegation that this would be challenged by the NHRC’s lawyer in the High Court, where the matter will be heard.

The teachers’ delegation impressed upon the Chairperson to constitute an independent enquiry committee constituting of members with credible track record in the field of human rights.

The delegation included Manisha Sethi and Adil Mehdi.
