Raipur : Army chief General Deepak Kapoor Saturday put off his visit to Counter Terrorism and Jungle Warfare College (CTJWC) located in Chhattisgarh’s restive southern Bastar region and left for New Delhi from the state capital after a two-day trip to the state.
Kapoor, who reached Raipur Friday, met Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan and Chief Minister Raman Singh. He was scheduled to visit the CTJWC Saturday but put it off at the last minute. According to official sources, a technical snag in his helicopter altered his schedule.
The CTJWC, set up by the state government in 2005 in Maoist-insurgency hit Kanker district, trains hundreds of the state’s policemen to “take on the guerrillas like a guerrilla”.
Officials said Kapoor’s visit – the first ever official trip of any army chief to Chhattisgarh – was basically to hold discussions with the government on setting up the first army cantonment in the state. About 200 acres of land has already been identified in Bilaspur district for the purpose, they said.
