Kuala Lumpur : Two ethnic Indian Malaysian women are in a jail in Pakistan’s Karachi city on charges of drug smuggling but say they were duped by an international drug syndicate.
In all, five Malaysian women were arrested on drug peddling charges and the two ethnic Indian women are among them.
One of the women, 44-year-old Siti Aishan Hamid, was released last month and returned here Tuesday, the New Straits Times reported Thursday.
She identified one of the Indian origin women only as Rani, a 32-year-old divorcee with four children.
Rani was sentenced to a jail term of three years and six months, and a fine of Pakistani Rs.150,000 or another six months in jail for trying to smuggle drugs into the country.
“Rani needs all the help she can get. After her arrest, her family disowned her. The Malaysian consulate in Pakistan tried many times to get in touch with her parents but failed,” Hamid said.
“Most of the time Rani talked about her kids whom she missed very much. She asked me to reveal her story to the media in the hope of getting help,” she added.
Rani was arrested by the Pakistani authorities a week after Siti was detained.
She did not reveal the names of the other inmates, who are in their 20s. All she told the newspaper was that two were Malay and the other an ethnic Indian.
