Police baton charge crowd in Uttar Pradesh constituency

By IANS,

Lucknow : Police resorted to a baton charge to disperse a crowd near a polling station in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district where people, including members of political outfits gathered, alleging that the authorities were not allowing persons without voter ID cards to cast their votes.

“We had to use force when people started assembling near the Azimiyam School polling booth, alleging that they were not being allowed to exercise their franchise without the voter identity card,” police inspector D.R. Yadav told reporters in Ghazipur, some 280 km from Lucknow.

Led by members of different political parties, the protesters alleged they were not allowed to vote despite having their name in the electoral list.

However, the matter was sorted out later with the intervention of the district authorities, the police officer said.

While the police claimed no one was injured during the incident, local journalists said at least 10 people received injuries.
