Madrid : Spanish league champions Real Madrid announced Wednesday that part of the gate money from Saturday’s league opener against neighbours Atletico Madrid would be sent to Peru to help victims of the recent earthquake there.
Real have not stated what percentage of the gate money would be donated, but have insisted that it will be “a substantial part”.
In addition, there will be a small ceremony for the victims just before the match, which will kick off the Liga programme for the 2007-8 season.
Real had announced Tuesday that all 80,000 tickets for the local derby had been sold, despite many “Madridista” fans still being away on holiday – and despite the poor pre-season form of Bernd Schuster’s side.
