UPA to continue with its economic reforms: Congress

By IANS,

New Delhi : Enthused by the poll win, the Congress party Saturday said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) will continue with its economic policies, but not at the cost of the public sector.

“We will continue with the economic reforms, but not at the cost of the public sector,” Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said, referring to the disinvestment carried out by the previous National Democratic Alliance government in state-owned profit making firms.

Dwivedi said that the UPA’s economic policies, especially the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and farm loan waiver had played a major role in the people reposing faith in the Congress.

After the new government is formed, economic recovery will be its first priority, a senior party leader said.

“To get back to 6-6.5 percent growth rate and 7 percent plus thereafter would be the first priority of the government. Unless we revive the economy we cannot pursue our social agenda,” the Congress leader said.

To a question on how long the Indian economy will take to recover from the current crunch situation, he said: “The economy will face a hard time for some more time, but we hope to recover soon.”
