Marriott blast suspect arrested in Karachi

Karachi: An Al Qaeda operative who is believed to have masterminded the deadly bombing of Islamabad’s Marriott Hotel last year was arrested here Sunday, a media report said.

Officials described Muhammad Anwar as a local commander of the Al Qaeda network and said he is believed have masterminded the Marriott Hotel attack in which more than 50 people had died.

The police have also arrested three of his accomplices, while four others managed to flee, Geo TV said, citing unnamed officials.

The police raided a house in the Model Colony area in the city where a meeting of a banned religious organisation was underway. All the four accused were captured at the site, the report said.

A huge cache of arms, as also explosive material like sulphur powder and nitric acid, were seized from the captured terrorists.
