New Delhi : The Congress, partner in the ruling Jammu and Kashmir coalition, Tuesday expressed confidence that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would come out unscathed from the opposition allegation linking him to a sex scandal, which forced him to step down.
“Omar (Abdullah) stands on a high moral ground…He will fight and prove his innocence,” Rajya Sabha MP and state Congress chief Saifuddin Soz told IANS here.
An emotionally charged Abdullah, who became the chief minister of the National Conference-Congress coalition government in January 2009, resigned from his post after senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig alleged in the state assembly that his name figured in the list of accused in the sex scam that rocked the state in 2002.
“Omar should not get too emotional,” Soz said.
Omar Abdullah, of the National Conference, submitted his resignation to Governor N.N.Vohra. The governor has accepted his resignation.
The sensational sex scandal, involving some politicians and security officials rocked the state in 2006.
Dismissing that the controversy and the chief minister’s resignation will force any constitutional crisis in the state, Soz said, “There is no question of governor’s rule in the state. Both the Congress and the NC (National Conference) together will find a solution.”
