Srinagar : The Hizbul Mujahideen guerrilla involved in the killings of two paramilitary troopers in Srinagar Monday was shot dead by the police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Friday, police said.

A senior police officer told IANS that Shamim alias Rizwan, a senior Hizbul Mujahideen guerrilla, was killed by the local police in a gun battle in Pattan area of Baramulla district.

“The terrorist was killed in Poshwari area of Pattan tehsil in Baramulla district today (Friday) in an operation exclusively carried out by the state police,” the police officer said.

According to the police, Rizwan was wanted in the killings of two central reserve police force (CRPF) troopers who were shot dead at point blank range in Srinagar Monday.

“He had crossed into the Valley in 2006 and was arrested and detained under the Public Safety Act. After his release, he again joined the Hizbul Mujahideen and masterminded shootouts against police and CRPF troopers,” the officer said.

Rizwan was also wanted in the recent shooting of two CRPF troopers in Srinagar city, the officer added.
