Kochi: Tirupur in Tamil Nadu remains uneasily calm after the arrest of 21 persons of two groups, who were allegedly involved in the violent incidents during the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations on August 25. Some were held reportedly on charges of throwing stones at the each other when a procession carrying a Ganesha idol was passing through the area. Others were arrested reportedly on charges of damaging a van while it was returning after the immersion of the Ganesha idol at PAP canal.
As soon as the news of the arrest spread, a crowd blocked the Tirupur-Kangayam Road demanding the release of the eight arrested there. The crowd could be dispersed only after the explanation of senior police officers regarding the reasons for arrest.
The police arrested 13 people for pelting stones and eight for damaging the van. Stone pelting took place at Sri Nagar near the New Bus Stand when the Ganesha idol was passing through the area. Some persons also had tried to oppose the route of the procession. The van was damaged at Kangayam Cross Road when it was returning after the immersion of the idol at the PAP canal.
About 500 police officers from six districts were brought to the Tirupur sub-division as a precautionary measure. Superintendents of Police N Kannan (Tirupur), Kapil Saratkar Chindurio (Nilgiris) and Jaichandran (Erode) also camped in the city to supervise the situation.
