Baghdad : The Shiite shrine of Ahmed Ibn Imam al-Kadhim in the northern Iraqi city of Baquba was blown up Saturday by unidentified gunmen, witnesses told a local news source.
The independent Voices of Iraq news agency quoted resident Mohammed al-Tamimi as saying at least 20 gunmen detonated a large mass of explosive charges which “completely destroyed” the shrine.
“This is the third attack on the shrine; the first attack was on April 16, 2005 and the second on February 6, 2006,” al-Tamimi said.
Ahmed Ibn Imam al-Kadhim, to whom the shrine was built, was the son of Imam Moussa al-Kadhim. The site, located in the capital of Diyala province, is a pilgrimage destination.
