Jammu : A Lashker-e-Toiba militant was shot dead by the security forces in Banihal area of Ramban district, while a District Commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) laid down his arms before the police and army in mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday.
Sources said that a joint team of army and police launched a joint operation in forest area of Gund in Banihal area on Monday evening. The troops, sources told NAK, were chasing a militant, who was injured in a gun battle on Saturday, in which one LeT militant was killed.
The troops, they said, trapped the militant and asked him to surrender. However, the militant tried to escape under the cover of heavy fire. The fire was returned and in the ensuing brief gun battle the ultra was shot dead, a police officer said.
The slain militant was identified as Khursheed Ahmed son of Habib Lone of Kwat, Drubeel, Kishtwar.
Meanwhile, a district commander of JeM surrendered before police and army in Doda district, today.
Identified as Abdul Gani alias Abu Mavia alias Mauz son of Abdul Rehman of Marwah, Kishtwar, the militant surrendered before the police and 10 Rashtriya Rifles, Senior Superintendent of Police Doda Manhor Singh told News Agency of Kashmir.
He said that Mavia was a top ranked militant and was presently working as district commander of JeM.
He (Mavia) had joined militancy in the year 2002 and undergone arms training in Balakote training camp in POK where he was imparted training in handling of AK, LMG, Picka gun, pistol, hurling of grenades etc, the SSP said.
He said as revealed by the militant, after getting training, he came back and remained active in Anantnag, Marwah, Warwan, and Kishtwar areas.
The militant handed over one AK rifle with two magazines and seventy rounds, one Chinese pistol with one magazine and 8 rounds, 64 rounds of 9 mm caliber, 4 Chinese grenades, 1 wireless set without battery besides some huge quantity of incriminating material.
The JeM Commander according to police handout was the pioneer of establishing JEM unit in Marwah and Dachhan areas of Kishtwar district.
