Berlin : The German Military Association refused on Wednesday sending more troops from the German army, Bundeswehr, to Afghanistan, saying that was “unnecessary”.
Head of the association Ulrich Kirsch told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper that what is more important than sending more troops is to achieve just balance among western countries regarding troop deployment, in addition to providing enough support to units serving in Afghanistan.
It is also vital to achieve balance in significant fields like missions aiming to rebuild civilian sectors, he added.
Eight years after sending international forces, there are still shortage and weakness in the infrastructure of Afghanistan, he pointed out.
He called German Chancellor Angela Merkel to work on achieving solidarity between the German society and the military units serving in Afghanistan.
He revealed that Merkel wanted to keep the number of German troops working with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) below 4,500.
On Tuesday, the newly appointed German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor Guttenberg said that the operations of German troops in Germany were “war-like”.
Germany’s former defense minister had said that the operations focused on “civilian aspects”, as well as training for Afghan soldiers.
