US National Security Adviser says ties with Pakistan have bright future, nuclear safe

Washington : Holding out Washington’s commitment to economic and democratic development of Pakistan, President Obama’s National Security Adviser James Jones on Friday said U.S.-Pakistan relationship transcends current anti-terror efforts and have a bright future.

“The relationship between Pakistan and the United States is a positive one, and will only grow in a positive direction in the future. The United Stats will support democratic process that Pakistan is adhereing to. We will do everything we can to be a good friend and ally,” said Jones, a retired marines general.

Speaking at Washington’s Foreign Press Center days after President Barack Obama’s announcement of 30,000 troops escalation in conflict-torn Afghanistan, Jones said the relations between Pakistan and U.S. cover broad-based areas like economic and trade cooperation and transcend the ongoing fight against insurgents in the Afghan border region and and nuclear safety.

He voiced confidence in the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.

“Obviously, the nuclear is safe. Pakistan has an enormous responsibility within the community of nations that have nuclear weapons. They are very well aware of that and we have regular consultations on those issues.”

Stressing wide-ranging bilateral relations, James Jones particularly cited cooperative efforts by Islamabad and Washington‘s towards developing trade and economic development of Pakistan and peace and stability in South Asia.

He also expressed confidence in the democratic future of Pakistan.

“So the democratic principle, we hope, will continue to thrive and grow and reach its full potential in the future, which will be good for the people of Pakistan.”

He said the U.S. will help Pakistan in dealing with insurgents operating along Pakistan-Afghanistan border and work in partnership with Pakistan military to put an end to militant threat in restive region.
