New Delhi : A senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer was arrested from Uttar Pradesh for duping several women after marrying them for dowry and then throwing them out of his house, police said Friday.
Pramod Kumar Bajaj, additional director at the Regional Training Institute of Direct Taxes at Gomti Nagar of Lucknow, was arrested Friday following a case against him in the Bharat Nagar police station of northwest Delhi Nov 6. Bajaj has been sent to judicial custody.
The case was registered on the compliant of Rakhi Gupta, a resident of Ashok Vihar in north Delhi.
“Pramod Bajaj has ruined lives of number of innocent girls by marrying them and making them to leave his house or by throwing them out. He had also misused his official position and money power in order to achieve his objectives and illegal designs,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest Delhi) N.S. Bundela.
“He used to retain all gifts and jewellery items brought by the brides at the time of their marriages. When the respective families of the harassed girls tried to seek justice, he used to apply his official strength in getting raids of income tax conducted and lodged number of false cases against them,” Bundela added.
The police said Bajaj contacted Gupta after seeing her profile on matrimonial site jeevansathi.com. He misrepresented his date of birth and marital status. He kept on calling the complainant on her mobile phone and finally succeeded in getting her consent for marriage.
The marriage took place in December last year. Heavy gifts and cash were given to the bridegroom by the family and relatives of the bride.
After marriage Bajaj took Gupta to his government accommodation in Malabar Hill of Mumbai and started harassing her for more dowry.
“Bajaj further put her in house arrest condition. Subsequently, Gupta came to know that Bajaj had wives and children from previous marriages. She asked Bajaj, who then manhandled her and threw her out of his house,” the officer said.
Police were trying to ascertain the number of women, whom he had cheated in the past.
