“He just told us that he was not interested in captaining the Indian team,” M.P. Pandove, joint secretary of the Indian cricket board, told IANS.

Added BCCI’s chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty in Mumbai: “We were surprised by the sudden development. Dravid had spoken on the matter to board president Sharad Pawar in New Delhi Thursday. He had expressed his desire to be released of the captaincy with immediate affect before the forthcoming tour of Australia.

“The BCCI will probably select a new captain on Sep 18 at a special meeting,” Shetty added.

Karnataka state cricket association president Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar also expressed his surprise at Dravid’s decision, which he said was not a wise move.

Wadiyar also said he did not think Rahul was under pressure to quit as captain.
