Speaking at a political education center in Berlin Wednesday evening, Martin Hantke of the Tuebingen-based political think-tank Informationsstelle Militarisierung (IMI) pointed to revelations in 2007 by prominent US journalist Seymour Hersh who reported about secret CIA operations inside Iran aimed at stirring unrest.

The Bush plan allowed up to 400 million US dollars in covert spending for activities ranging from supporting dissident groups to spying on Iran’s nuclear program.

“I don’t see that such a secret funding has stopped,” Hantke added.

Meanwhile, the political scientist accused the US of a “new form of colonialism” by
establishing hundreds of military bases around the world.

This new colonialism does not mean there is a direct US occupation of a country, however the presence of American military bases ensures the strategic control of security organs and the territory of the country, Hantke said.

There are around 761 US military bases around the world as of 2008, according to the German peace researcher.
