Panaji: Names of foreigners on the electoral rolls in Goa will be deleted as soon as possible, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat told the state assembly Wednesday.
Kamat was speaking at a discussion on electoral issues during the monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly.
“I will ask the chief electoral officer to delete all the names of foreigners on the voting roll,” Kamat said in response to a question from Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) legislator Francis D’Souza.
D’Souza had said that names of foreigners appearing on electoral rolls posed a serious security concern to the state.
The issue of foreigners’ names appearing prolifically on electoral rolls in Goa has been debated several times in the state, after a US national Laxmi Gonsalves was elected as sarpanch (head) of Majorda, a coastal village in south Goa.
