Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has come up justifying the government and police in the developments that led to the arrest of PDP chairman Abdunnasir Maudany. The government has been criticised from certain corners on its dealing of the Maudany issue, even as Maudany himself and the Karnataka police praised the way the Kerala police dealt the matter.
Minister said that the Kerala police dealt with the Maudany issue following the legal procedures strictly. The police had no confusion on whether to let Maudany surrender in court or to let the Karnataka police arrest him. Certain sections are accusing the government on the matter because no untoward incidents took place as they expected, Mr Balakrishnan stated in an article. Maudany was arrested by the Karnataka police on Tuesday from Kollam and has been remanded to police custody till August 26 by a magistrate in Bengaluru.
The government came to know that Maudany was named in the case through the media. A CI and two constables reached Kochi on August 10 and went to Kollam accompanied by the media, which was different from the usual methods for arresting an accused. This led to the flocking of people in the Anvarssery where Maudany was residing and the supporters said that they won’t let Maudany be arrested. When the Karnataka police contacted the Kollam SP, he informed them that the President was visiting and that precautionary measures needed to be taken. The Karnataka Home Minister officially contacted his Kerala counterpart on August 12 only requesting cooperation for the arrest after August 15.
The Kerala police then took measures to make the situations favourable for the arrest by Karnataka police and to make sure there were no law and order problems at Anvarssery. The prohibitory orders were clamped to that effect. Then Maudany announced he would surrender in court. The Kerala and Karnataka police expected him to surrender on August 16 (Monday) or within noon on August 17. But Maudany did not get out of Anvarssery till 1 o’clock after his press conference. This prompted the Karnataka police to arrest him at 1.15 pm.
A group of people had expected that the police would enter the orphanage and masjid complex inside Anvarssery and arrest Maudany. But the government wanted to make the arrest peaceful. The Kerala police dealt with the matter well disappointing those who had expected law and order problems in the state as well police atrocities, firing and bloodshed at the time of arrest. Some lament that the arrest warrant issued by the court was executed very late. The Minister pointed out that the accusations are made by those forces which had expected to organize communal strife, conflict and riot on the matter.
Some other sections have also criticised the move of the Karnataka police to arrest Maudany when he was already going to surrender. There are also accusations on the huge police presence and the media reports suggesting the police were arresting a criminal escaping from law while Maudany had expressed his willingness to court arrest in the beginning itself.
Meanwhile, there is still uncertainty on whether Maudany would be taken to Kudak for collecting evidences. The chargesheet had accused that Maudany had attended the conspiracy of the Bengaluru blast case organized by the prime accused Thadiyantavide Naseer in Kudak. Maudany is being questioned by the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Om Karaiya. Maudany is provided two attendants considering his handicap (his right leg was lost in a bomb attack in 1992). He is also reportedly continuing the Ramadan fast and taking the necessary medicines for his illnesses.
Abdunnasir Maudany, 31st accused in the Bengaluru blast case was arrested by the Karnataka police with the assistance of the Kerala police from the Anvarssery campus in Kollam on Tuesday. He was arrested when he was going to surrender in court. He was then flown to Bengaluru from where he was remanded to police custody till August 26 by a Bengaluru magistrate. Maudany had earlier been in jail for nearly 10 years in connection with the Coimbatore blast case and was released in August 2007 finding him innocent of the charges.
