Kolkata : A team of Trinamool Congress leaders Saturday met the West Bengal police chief Naparajit Mukherjee to apprise him of the “terror camps” being run by the Communist party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists in West Bengal’s Maoist-affected areas.
TMC leaders Partha Chatterjee and Mukul Roy accompanied by retired police officers and now party workers Rajpal Singh and H.A. Safi submitted a letter including a detailed list of 93 camps run by the CPI-M armed cadres in Jungalmahal (Maoist affected forested areas of West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura) and parts of Burdwan, Hooghly and Birbhum districts.
According to a state government official, the erstwhile police chief had rubbished all claims of such camps being run in the troubled areas while the new director general of police had promised to look into the matter. Following his verbal assurance, the Trinamool leaders submitted a consolidated list to him.
Partha Chatterjee said: “The Left-Front government sponsored terror is a real problem in the state. The DGP has patiently listened to what we had to say in this regard. This is a transitional period in the state and we want the police and administration to work impartially and prove their mettle during such troubled times.”
“We have serious allegations against the Burdwan Police Superintendent Rajaram Rajshekharan. He is working under the directive of the CPI-M and not in the best interest of people. We demand that he is immediately transferred from the post,” Chatterjee said.
According to the official, following the meeting with the Trinamool Congress leaders, the DGP held a meeting with the state Home Secretary Samar Ghosh.
However, Ghosh said that it was a routing meeting and had nothing to do with the visit of the Trinamool Congress leadership.
“They might have submitted a complaint letter with the DGP, but our meeting had nothing to do about it. It was a routine meeting,” said Ghosh.
Meanwhile the Trinamool Congress has threatened to launch movement if suitable steps are not taken to address their allegations.
“We have come under instruction of our chief Mamata Banerjee and will resort to democratic agitations if the police and administration fails to act on the situation,” added Chatterjee.
