Munda visits mother before taking over as chief minister

Ranchi : Before taking on the mantle of Jharkhand chief minister for the third time, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arjun Munda played the dutiful son and went to Jamshedpur to seek the blessings of his mother.

Munda, 42, is scheduled to be sworn-in Saturday as head of a BJP-Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government, signalling the end of President’s Rule that was imposed June 2.

Munda and his wife Meera went to Jamshedpur Thursday night and returned Friday.

“He cares for everyone in the family. He manages to take time from his hectic engagements for the family and knows how to keep everyone together,” said his mother Sayra, who has two other sons.

“I follow my mother’s words — to help everyone if you can,” Munda told IANS earlier.

Munda, born May, 3, 1968, rose from humble beginnings to become chief minister for the first time in March 2003 and again two years later in March 2005.

He joined politics in the early 1990s and became legislator on a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) ticket in 1995. In 2000, he joined the BJP, being re-elected as legislator in 2000 and 2005. In the 2009 general elections, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jamshedpur.

Besides politics, Munda loves music and playing golf. He has authored two books.
