Leipzig : Prosecutors in the eastern German city of Leipzig Thursday charged three men in connection with a mob assault on eight Indians in the small town of Muegeln during a town festival in mid-August.
Prosecutors charged the men, aged 18, 23 and 35, with incitement. The 23-year-old faces the additional charge of damage to property. They said investigations, regarding another suspect, aged 22, were continuing.
The men aged 18 and 35 had admitted shouting racist slogans, prosecutors said, while the 23-year-old was maintaining his right to silence.
A linked probe into a fight outside the festival tent was still underway, with four Germans and four Indians under investigation, prosecutors said.
Following this fight in the early hours of Aug 19, a mob of some 50 people chased a group of Indians in the town. Fourteen people were hurt in the incident.
The Indians suffered bruises, cuts, black eyes and other injuries as they fled across a street from 50 yelling Germans and took refuge in a pizzeria owned by one of them.
The violence, which began as a brawl between Indian and German men on a dance floor during a summer street festival, had diplomatic repercussions, with Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar voicing her concern and asking Berlin to take action to ensure there would be no repetition.
The incident was widely reported in India.
