Chennai: Rich tributes were paid to former diplomat from Hyderabad and author of many books, Dr. Mohammad Hamidullah on his eighth death anniversary in a function organized by Tamil Nadu Backward Dakkani Muslims Welfare Association.
S. M. Pasha, president of the Association, recalled the scholarly research work done by Dr. Hamidullah. Late Dr. Hamidullah wrote his master’s thesis on “The Muslim Conduct of State” from Osmania University in Hyderabad. That thesis later on turned into a book.
Dr. Hamidullah completed his first Doctorate degree from Bonn University in Germany in 1933 and within a short period of nine months, he obtained another doctorate degree from the University of Paris, on “Early Muslim Diplomacy.”
“Born on 16 Muharram 1326 (Feb. 19, 1908) in Hyderabad Deccan, he remained loyal to Hyderabad Deccan,” Mr. Pasha added. He was also Hyderabad’s ambassador to the League of Nations. Dr. Hamidullah passed away on Dec 17, 2002, in Jacksonville, FL, USA while he was 94 years old.
Those who showered profuse tributes on Dr. Mohammad Hamidullah Sahib included Dr. Syed Mohammad Ibrahim, Ismail Baig Sahib (Azghar-Vellori), Dr. Hameed Abdul Aziz Qazi (Maharastra), Shafeeuallha Baig, Prof. Hayath Ifthaqar, A. Faizur Rahman, Professor Zackria Badsha.
The association also appealed to the government of Tamil Nadu to set up a “commissionarate” for the preservation and development of the exclusive and distinctive culture of the “Dakkani Muslims” who are a minority (Vestibular Minority) within the Muslim minority in the state.
