Kolkata: Singer-turned-Trinamool Congress MP Kabir Suman Saturday echoed the Maoists and slammed the present system of governance despite his party being an ally of the United Progressive Alliance government.
Quoting the words of arrested Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) politburo member Kobad Gandhi, Suman said: “In the present situation in India, no government could be formed which could respect the common people.”
Addressing a cultural convention organised to protest anti-Maoist operations, Suman said: “Those who believe in parliamentary democracy, treat common people as voters, never as a human being. And so no party will be able to stand for the common people.”
Ballad singer Gadar, dramatist Bibhas Chakraborty and other renowned artists were present at the cultural convention near a Metro station in Esplanade area here.
Theatre artists Shambhaji Bhagat from Maharashtra and Vinay-Chaarul from Ahmedabad took part in this musical protest.
From Kolkata, besides Bibhas Chakraborty, veteran dramatist Badal Sarkar, singer Pratul Mukhopadhyay, human rights activist Sujato Bhadra participated.
Students from the Jadavpur University as well as from forested tribal areas also performed at the convention.
All of them shouted slogans demanding immediate release of political prisoners and the lifting of a ban on the CPI-Maoist.
