The meeting was attended by fourteen students and the university officials including Registrar, Prof. V.K. Abdul Jaleel, Controller of Exams and Admission, Prof. Pervez Mustajab and Prof. Akhtar Haseeb yesterday evening. At the meeting students were given a written assurance that their all demands will be fulfilled including conducting the election of AMU Students’ Union and revoking of the suspension of five students involved in the dharna, informed Dr Rahat Abrar, PRO, AMU.

The election process of the AMU Students’ Union will be started from 3rd January 2011, as already announced. Besides, the election of representatives of the University Court will also be held along with AMU Students’ Union election. Every bonafide student is allowed to participate in the election.

The negotiation was carried out with the involvement of Mr. Basheer Kunnail, an AMU alumnus, and Mr. Irshad Ahmed, Member of the University Court. The District Magistrate, Mr. Ravindra Naik, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Satendra Veer Singh, Additional District Magistrate, Mr. C.P. Singh and Superintendent of Police, Mr. M.S. Chauhan played a very positive role in resolving the issue.

In the late night at 11pm Vice Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis addressed the students and urged them to keep peaceful atmosphere at the campus: “we all should start a new chapter in AMU by becoming partners in regaining the glory of this institution” he said adding “The Students’ Union is being restored with a great hope that its activity will create a ‘union of hearts and minds’ in the AMU campus and we all live like one family.”

It should be noted here that a group of students have been staging dharna in front of the residence of the vice-chancellor on the campus from October 4, 2010 demanding restoration of Students’ Union at the university. This compelled VC to stay in a guest house instead of his official house. Last night he entered his lodge after 78 days.
