“The ITS can be an effective system to tackle the Commonwealth Games rush and we are forming a committee to explore the system in the city,” M Ramachandra, Secretary, Urban Development, told PTI. “It should be implemented not only in Delhi but in all major cities across the country.”

Delhi roads are already witnessing a heavy load as there are more vehicles in the capital city than in any other major city in the country. The load will increase manifold as there will be thousands of sportspersons and visitors in the capital during the Games in 2010.

“The system is basically an IT-enabled system which will help in regulating the traffic in a smooth and secured manner during the rush hour. It involves the entire gamut of transportation including signalling, tracking, road condition, availability of vehicles and traffic pattern,” said Ramachandra.

“For example during the office rush hour, the number of buses or other mode of transportation required in a particular route and the routes to avoid during this hour will be known and disseminated to public in shortest possible time.

“The system will also guide a commuter to take a particular route for reaching the destination without being stranded on roads at rush hour time,” he said adding the availability of the space in parking lots at some important locations will also be indicated in the system.
